Sebastian Loewe, Academic, Artist and Activist
Sebastian Loewe, born in 1978 in Potsdam, Germany, received a B.A. in 2005 from Ruhr University Bochum, Germany, where he studied media studies and communication studies as well as history, and a diploma in media art in 2010 from Burg Giebichenstein University of Art and Design Halle, Germany. He studied a year abroad at the Department of Intermedia Art at the Tokyo University of the Arts, Japan in 2008/09. Sebastian Loewe was also a recipient of a three-year scholarship from Heinrich Boell Foundation. He currently holds a scholarship from Rosa Luxemburg Foundation in order to accomplish his doctoral dissertation “Discours About Kitsch”, which is a foundational interdisciplinary study of the breadth of kitsch theory and aesthetic judgement as well as a discourse analysis of kitsch judgements in German mass media after 1989. Loewe helps organizing an international three-day conference on kitsch in 2013 at the University of Art and Design, Halle Germany. He also focusses on issues related to aesthetic theory, art and politics, art and activism, art and science, popular culture and mass culture.
Sebastian Loewe curated numerous exhibitions including “Zombie GDR” and “With a Chainsaw In the Left Hand”, is co-founder of the activist platform and political art project “ufo-University”, which in its initial phase was co-funded by the Saxony-Anhalt Arts Foundation. A monograph is released in 2013 by Berlin-based publisher „The Green Box“ reflecting on the theoretical work and practical interventions of the project.
